1. The Trouble with Phthalates (The "Enduring" Scent)
Phthalates (pronounced thāl-ātes) are a group of chemical compounds widely used in the fragrance industry. Why? They act as a solvent and scent fixative — in other words, they help a fragrance linger far longer than it naturally would.
That chemical "longevity" comes at a cost:
- The headache trigger — phthalates are a common culprit behind migraines and headaches in sensitive people. It's part of the reason this brand exists in the first place: it started with my daughter and me testing scents at the kitchen table, and neither of us wanted a headache to be part of the deal.
- Endocrine disruption — phthalates are classified as Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs). They can mimic hormones like oestrogen, potentially interfering with the body's natural balance.
- Respiratory concerns — exposure to phthalates has been linked to respiratory irritation, which is a real concern for anyone with asthma or chemical sensitivities.
2. The Problem with Parabens (The Hidden Preservative)
Parabens are artificial preservatives used across cosmetics and personal care products to stop the growth of bacteria, mould, and yeast. They can also turn up in lower-quality fragrance oils.
Like phthalates, they bring their own set of concerns:
- Hormone mimics — parabens can also act as endocrine disruptors by mimicking oestrogen in the body.
- Skin and immune reactions — parabens are known to cause skin irritation and allergic reactions, particularly for those with eczema or dermatitis.
3. The Truth About Essential Oils in Candles and Melts
"Why not just use pure essential oils?" It's a fair question — and while essential oils are natural, they run into real safety and performance problems when heated.
- Fire risk — many essential oils have a low flash point, meaning they can become flammable at relatively low temperatures. Adding them to a candle or wax melt can create a genuine fire hazard.
- Chemical breakdown — the heat from a candle flame or wax melt burner can cause delicate essential oils to break down chemically, releasing compounds that are often more irritating than the original oil.
- Poor scent throw — essential oils are highly volatile. Heated, they evaporate quickly, so the lovely scent you start with fades fast, leaving you with next to nothing.
- Toxicity risk — "natural" doesn't automatically mean safe. Some pure essential oils (cinnamon and eucalyptus among them) are simply too potent to be inhaled safely over long periods at high concentration.
